Hemodialysis Catheter

Dialysis catheters are artificial indwelling transcutaneous conduits used to access the intravascular space or intraperitoneal space for renal replacement therapy.

A hemodialysis catheter is a catheter used for exchanging blood between a hemodialysis machine and a patient. The dialysis catheter contains two lumens, one venous and one arterial.

How is a dialysis catheter placed?

A catheter will be placed several weeks or months before you begin dialysis so that you have time to heal. It is usually placed in your non-dominant arm — so if you are right-handed, it would be placed into your left arm.

What type of catheter is used for hemodialysis?

The catheter used for hemodialysis is a tunneled catheter because it is placed under the skin. There are two types of tunneled catheters: cuffed or non-cuffed. Non-cuffed tunneled catheters are used for emergencies and for short periods (up to 3 weeks).
